MAKE A SKETCH AND A MODEL OF YOUR PRIMATE

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Primate Basket

  •  Zoo School Book

  • White drawing paper

  •  Pencil, black-line marker, pencil crayons, scissors, glue

  •  Bag of salt dough      (Note: if you are using the recipe in the link, you can leave out the oil and the colored drink mix.)

  • Paints

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

STEP 1: Realistic Drawing

1.        Get a white drawing paper from the Job 2 Folder.

2.        Open up your Zoo School book to your primate observation pages. Take a look through the drawings you made during your observations.

3.        Take a look at some photographs of your primate in the Zoo School Website.

Click on the primate picture that you need:

4. Make a drawing of your primate on the white drawing sheet:

  • Include lots of detail.

  • Use the whole size of the sheet to make the drawing.

  • Use pencil first and then use the black-line marker to trace over the pencil.

  • Use pencil crayons to add in the colors of your primate.

5. Cut your drawing out and glue it to the group information poster.

STEP 2: 3-D Model

1. Get the bag of salt-dough from your primate basket and divide it between the group.

2. Use your drawing and the pictures you’ve seen to help you make a model of your primate.  You need to decide the position of your model.  Will it be sitting, standing, swinging, climbing, eating or playing.

3. Once you’ve decided what your model will be doing try to model your whole piece of dough at once.  If you try to put different parts together they are likely to fall apart when your model dries.

4. Put your model on a paper towel and mark your name on the towel.  Then put your model and its paper towel on a cookie sheet to dry out. This may take about one week. If you want to dry it more quickly, your model can be baked.

5. Put your model on a cookie sheet to dry out or to bake. This may take some time.

6. Later, when it is dry you will paint your model the colors of your primate and put in detail.

WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED

·       Clean up what you have used with your group.

·       Wash your hands from the salt-dough.

Take a minute to look through all the drawings that are on your group’s poster and take turns describing your picture to your group.
